Form vs. Function: Viniyoga and the Art and Science of Adaptation

Join Gary Kraftsow, Founder and Director of the American Viniyoga Institute, and named by Yoga Journal as a Lifetime Contributor and “One of America’s Leading Yoga Therapists,” for an intensive for teachers and advanced students.

Much of contemporary āsana practice is focused on mastering the forms of each āsana. One of the great gifts of Kriṣṇamācārya’s teaching was to shift this focus from the form of the āsana to its function for the practitioner. Come examine the science of adapting the form of an āsana to serve the functional needs of the practitioner and explore the creative art of integrating adaptations into our personal practice and our teaching. We'll focus on how to make appropriate adaptations, what is useful and what may be harmful, and how to modify asana for different conditions. Discover this multidimensional approach that empowers the individual to understand his or her own unique needs and promote effective healing for a wide range of conditions.

Cost: $55

The Living, Healing Tradition of Yoga Therapy with Gary Kraftsow

GARY_KRAFTSOW_ASANA_UNLOCKED-1_(1).jpg

Join Gary Kraftsow, named by Yoga Journal as a Lifetime Contributor and “One of America’s Leading Yoga Therapists," as he demonstrates the Viniyoga Therapist approach to managing structural, physiological, and psycho-emotional conditions.

In the structural segments (Saturday), we will explore practices to work with common structural conditions related to the back, hips, neck, and shoulders. In the physiological segments (Sunday), we will explore practices to manage fatigue that accompanies many conditions. In the psychological segment (Sunday), we will explore practices to manage symptoms of anxiety, reframe our life orientation, and find sources of happiness and inspiration.

Yoga therapy treats the whole person, seeking to change attitudes and actions that inhibit the natural healing process, and cultivate attitudes and actions that support it.
— Gary Kraftsow, MA, E-RYT 500, C-IAYT Founder and Director of the American Viniyoga Institute

Friday 7:30–9:30pm
Introduction to Yoga Therapy

Introduction to the multidimensional nature of yoga and the applications of Yoga Therapy. Learn the distinction between a yoga class and a session with a Yoga Therapist.

Saturday 2:00–8:30pm (with 4:30–6pm break)
Yoga Therapy for Low Back/Hips
Yoga Therapy for Neck/Shoulders

Explore biomechanics of the back, hips, neck, and shoulders, and the types of problems that can affect these areas. Experience a sequence of adapted āsanas designed to relieve symptoms and strengthen these areas of the body.

Sunday 2:00–8:30pm (with 4:30–6:00pm break)
Yoga Therapy for Fatigue

Do you ever find yourself fluctuating between fatigue and stress? Would you like to understand how to use your practice to manage your energy? Focusing on the autonomic nervous system, we'll consider how to create and maintain balanced energy throughout the day. Then we'll explore how to use breath-centric asana and pranayama as functional tools to help you move through life with vitality and relaxation. Practice includes breath-centric asana and pranayama.

Yoga Therapy for Anxiety

We'll focus on psychological aspects of the human system, explore models of the integrated personality that emerge from Vedic teachings, and discover the science of meditation that the ancients developed for reducing suffering and cultivating our higher human potential. The ancients understood emotion as the complex interaction between our mood, cognitive processes, behavior, and physiologic responses, and developed practices to reduce troubling emotional states and cultivate positive ones. We'll experience the interaction of these four aspects of emotion and the practices used to transform states of anxiety.

Cost: $295

Due to the integrated nature of this experience, it is recommended that students attend the entire weekend. Students may sign up for Saturday or Sunday only for $185. Registration for either single day includes the highly recommended Friday evening introduction.

Don’t miss this comprehensive workshop for fresh insights into working with modern conditions drawn from the ancient lineage of Yoga Therapy.

About Carson

About Carson

A self-described “Handstand-Up Comedian,” Carson combines his love for being upside-down with his natural ability to make people laugh. During his workshops, trainings, and retreats, students are encouraged to push their limits and explore their edge, while maintaining a playful attitude. In every instance, one can be sure to break a sweat, learn something new, and leave with a smile on his or her face.

After years of encouragement from his mother, Carson began practicing yoga in 2010. He did his first 200-hour teacher training in 2011 at Little River Yoga and has since studied Ashtanga Yoga with David B. Keil and has since evolved his focus and loves teaching Rocket Yoga. As a movement enthusiast, Carson incorporates a variety of disciplines into his yoga classes, which focus on building a strong mind and body.

Carson is an E-RYT 200, YACEP | International travel yoga instructor | Gold Medalist in the 8-and-under freestyle (swim)

Deep: A Summer Weekend of Yoga with Barbara Benagh

Cited by Yoga Journal as “one of yoga’s most compelling and distinctive voices”, Barbara Benagh’s way of practicing yoga asana has evolved into an inquiry that draws attention more to the path than the destination. She has also slowed the practice way down, allowing for a flow that offers an opportunity to dwell in the potent sensation of action, reaction, and adaptability in an increasingly nuanced way.

Barbara's style is unhurried, alignment-based and rich with story. Her voice and cues carry students into the deep currents of movement that ripple through the whole body on the rhythm of breathing and the echo of the body’s memory of its aquatic origins in the sea.

This weekend is for experienced students. Only a few spots left!

Cost: $225

This workshop will be held offsite at the Winsor School, 102 Pilgrim Rd., Boston, MA 02215. No props will be available so please come prepared with a mat, blanket, block, and strap.

At this time, registration is for the entire weekend only.

Please note that no refunds will be given for this workshop for cancellations made after Friday, July 5.

Please join us to celebrate the publication of Yoga Kurunta: Learning the Ropes on May 11 in Down Under Yoga’s Brookline studio.

This resource is a comprehensive guide to using wall ropes in your yoga practice. It features step-by-step instruction and over 100 pose variations, all in full color, with hundreds of photographs. There are two editions, both 244 pages long: a sturdily wire-bound book that lies flat and stays open, and a downloadable interactive PDF digital edition. Down Under teachers and assistants Tristan Boyer Binns, Donna Gross Javel, Val Leiter, Greg Sullivan, and Pam Toomey all worked together as the Boston Yoga Ropes Collective to create and publish this work. Patricia Walden wrote the foreword.

We will begin the evening’s festivities with a demonstration by the BYRC team of the step-by-step way we teach in the book, plus a show of some of our favorite poses. Patricia Walden will talk about the way ropes are used in Iyengar yoga. Tristan Boyer Binns will share how and why we created the book, and take any questions you may have. There will be celebratory cake and books for sale and signing. We can’t wait to see you there and celebrate this amazing achievement together!

Want to know more about Yoga Kurunta? Have a look at our website, www.ropes.yoga.

Please RSVP if you can so we have an idea how much cake to get!

Divine Yoga: Doing Asana with your Soul with Peentz Dubble

BKS Iyengar wrote, “I use the body to discipline the mind and to reach the soul. Asana, when done with the right intention, will help to transform an individual by taking the person away from an awareness of just the body toward the consciousness of the soul. You must feel your intelligence, your awareness, and your consciousness in every inch of your body.” We will use his words to inspire our practice in this workshop for intermediate students.
