Teacher Training Scholarship
Down Under School of Yoga is committed to making our school, teacher trainings, and the wider yoga community welcoming for everyone. Encouraging a diverse range of teaching voices is a pivotal step in creating safe spaces where all students can feel represented in the classroom.
To help facilitate this progress, Down Under is offering tuition-free scholarships for people of color in both our 200 Hour and 300 Hour Teacher Trainings.
Requirements for Scholarship Applicants:
This scholarship is intended for students who:
self-identify as a person of color.
have a consistent practice and commitment to yoga.
have a desire to teach yoga.
are able to attend all dates of the training.
Applicants to the 300 Hour training should have a Yoga Alliance-approved 200 Hour Teacher Training Certification.
Please complete the web form below.
Write a 1–2 page essay that addresses the following criteria for selection:
What impact has yoga had on your life? Describe your current practice.
How do you see yourself teaching yoga, or how might the training contribute to your future plans?
Describe any teaching experience of any kind that you have and how it might relate to teaching yoga.
Do you have any experience working with underprivileged communities or social justice activism, or is there a social justice component to your plans?
Is financial need a factor for you?
Do you practice at Down Under, and if so, what styles and teachers do you resonate with?
Submit one written letter of recommendation that supports your application. This could come from a yoga teacher, employer, colleague, or mentor.
Please email your essay to David Runkle at firstname.lastname@example.org and ask your recommender to send their letter to the same address. All submissions must be received two months prior to the start of the training. Applications will be evaluated based on the criteria above, and the strongest applicants may be invited to an in-person interview. For the 300 Hour training, the interviews may include a teaching audition. Recipients of the scholarship will be notified one month prior to the start of the training.
