Hannah Adams

Hannah is a Boston native who has spent most of her adult life living abroad between India, Brazil, Guatemala, and Peru. Through these extensive travels, Hannah learned over and over again that home is where her mat is. Her yoga and Pilates practices have allowed Hannah to maintain a sense of strength, presence, and happiness no matter where in the world she has found herself. This important role that yoga and Pilates have played in Hannah’s life is evident in the passion she brings into her classes. After making the decision to make well-being her full-time career, Hannah dedicated her time to the appropriate studies. She completed a 200-hour and 300-hour yoga teacher training, Pilates Mat teacher training, Usui Reiki Masters, and Ayurveda Massage training. She continues to further her education in Pilates apparatus and is soon to complete her teacher training in the Alexander Technique. Hannah is thrilled to bring her variety of disciplines to the community at Down Under Yoga. Whether you take a yoga or Pilates class, you will have the opportunity to kindly explore your body and mind in a variety of well-sequenced postures and movements. You will be challenged to try new things and revisit old habits, all with a strong concentration on breath use, core strength, and spiritual rejuvenation.

Kathleen Curran-Cheng

Kathleen is certified in STOTT Pilates Mat and Reformer Level 1 and has also completed training in STOTT Cadillac, Chair, and Barrel (CCB), as well as Special Population Training (ISP). Kathleen completed many Pilates workshops including Stability Chair, Intensifying Essential Reformer, Stability Barre and Programming 1 on the V2 Max Plus Reformer. Teaching Pilates since 2002, she has taught and trained at many local studios and clubs in addition to years of working in the fitness business. Kathleen holds a Master’s Degree in Cardiovascular Health and Exercise from Northeastern University and a BFA in Dance from the Boston Conservatory. Kathleen performed and taught modern dance in the Boston area. A lifelong lover of movement, Kathleen’s deep connection to yoga practice was awakened 3 years ago when she walked into a Down Under Yoga class. There she found a new passion for the mental and physical pursuit of yoga. Kathleen feels privileged to have recently graduated from the Down Under 200-hour Certification under the instruction of Natasha Rizopoulos, Kate Heffernan, and Michael Ponte. In addition to her Pilates practice, she continues to study and work towards teaching yoga classes.

Kathleen strongly believes that practicing Pilates can bring positive changes to her client’s bodies including strengthened abdominal and back muscles, improved alignment, increased flexibility and heightened body awareness.  Kathleen teaches a challenging class that runs at a quick pace. Yet modifications are always provided and all levels are welcome.

Additionally, Kathleen is a Certified Holistic Health Coach from the Institute for Integrated Nutrition.

When not instructing or training, Kathleen enjoys living a healthy lifestyle, cycling, reading, creative vegetarian cooking and spending time with her family.

Sami Lea Konczewski

Yoga saved Sami’s life; it’s from that place of determination and vulnerability that she teaches. A former ballerina, Sami originally turned to yoga to give her pain relief after back and hip surgeries at 16 and 21. Then in late 2014, Sami tragically lost her then fiancé. Her experience with trauma and grief completely changed her outlook on yoga. It was no longer simply a way to challenge her physicality; rather, it became an imperative tool towards survival and peace. Armed with experience and empathy, Sami’s classes mix creatively challenging sequencing with candid rawness.

Sami completed her first 200 hour teacher training in Austin in 2009 with her mentor, Desirae Pierce. Since then, she has attended Baptiste Institute’s Level One, Two, and Three trainings, and both participated in and assisted various programs with Baron Baptiste. In addition to Baptiste Yoga, Sami’s teaching is inspired by the steadfast alignment of (what was) Anusara, the lyrical dance of Vinyasa, the diligence of Ashtanga, and the value of slowing down through Yin.

Sami has been featured in various national publications as a cover model, teacher, and contributor including Origin Magazine, Mantra Yoga & Health, Colorado Yoga Magazine, and New York Yoga + Life; and in the book The Yoga Fix. With a gypsy-like thirst for travel, Sami leads retreats around the world. From Burning Man to Wanderlust, she has taught and assisted at many festivals and events, but her most humbling memory was the opportunity to teach at The White House during the annual Easter Egg Roll celebration. Teaching yoga to smiling children as the President and First Lady led the national anthem is something she’ll never forget.

Upon moving to Boston in early 2017, Sami joined the team at Down Under School of Yoga as the director of marketing, brand, and strategic planning. Early in her career, Sami worked in sports marketing for the Olympic Games, the World Cup, and other major sporting events and eventually this led her to couple her design degree with her yoga. Sami previously served as the creative director for several national yoga magazines and as a brand strategist for leading yoga industry names, like the Baptiste Institute. When Sami isn’t on her mat, at the studio, or in front of her laptop, she is probably wearing heels and dancing to live music, with a glass of champagne in her hand, and her wonderful man Patrick by her side. Learn more about Sami at samileayoga.com.

Masaaki Okamura

Born in Japan, Masaaki moved to Boston in ‘93, where he attended Boston University and graduated with a degree in psychology.  He began practicing yoga in 2002. 

Masaaki has training in Kyokushin-karate, with the Hong Kong Royal Police Aikido team, and the Hong Kong Asian Olympic Judo team. He brings over 20 years of martial arts training to his teaching with a strong emphasis on mental training. 

He has over a decade of teaching experience influenced by Coeli Marsh and Tom Alden.  In his classes, Masaaki is committed to training awareness, to tune attitude, and works to empower students own intelligence and wisdom to be able to heal and be whole. He uses skilled techniques to help students and remains committed to working with wisdom, and kindness to help others.
