Nancy Turnquist is a certified teacher of Iyengar Yoga at the Intermediate Junior II level. She began her yoga practice in earnest at the age of twenty-two when she met her teacher, Patricia. Nancy was so moved by how the study and practice of Iyengar yoga changed her life that she felt called to share the teachings with others. She has studied with senior Iyengar yoga teacher Patricia Walden for over 15 years and taught with her at BKS Iyengar Yogamala for the last decade. She also travels regularly to Pune, India to study with the Iyengar family and spent a year teaching yoga in Spanish and studying at the Center for Iyengar Yoga in Barcelona, Spain.
Nancy’s teaching is inspired by the joy and skill that arise from the practice of yoga. She works to clearly see the whole student and address emotional and physical challenges with individual attention, compassion, and alacrity. In her classes, she focuses on alignment and precision in the poses with the goal of helping students discover their full embodiment in their practice and their lives.
Nancy has a special interest in yoga therapy and woman’s health issues, particularly pregnancy. Her instruction focuses on an intuitive approach to therapeutic work based on BKS Iyengar’s teaching that, if one is focused and devoted, deep practice is always possible. She has worked with students with special conditions while assisting in Patricia’s classes over the years, has assisted in the Medical Class at RIMYI in Pune India and completed a three year therapeutics course with Stephanie Quirk. She is also involved in a Boston University research study on the benefits of Iyengar Yoga for depression. She has worked with pre- and postpartum women, through Yogamala and Harvard University, to build and strengthen their yoga practices and support their pregnancies and motherhood. After many years of supporting pregnant women and new moms, she recently became a mother herself.
Along with teaching and assisting in weekly classes and workshops, Nancy Turnquist assists Patricia’s teacher training program and has taught workshops nationally and internationally. She has had a lifelong love affair with the English and Spanish languages and is both a translator and poet. Nancy believes that, through devotion and intention, our bodies can express the poetry of our souls.
